Our Charities

The North Mecklenburg Woman’s Club serves dozens of local life-enhancing charities through year-long fundraising efforts and hundreds of hours of volunteer service across more than a dozen non-profit organizations. While our reach is wide, each year we focus our energy on a handful of carefully selected beneficiaries that help women, children, and families in our community. We choose charities that support and uplift our neighbors in need.

Here is a list of our most recent Tier 1 Charities, which are the recipients of the largest grants we award once a year in May. We also support many other non-profits in our Tier 2 funding category.

Charity Funding Process

North Mecklenburg Woman’s Club (NMWC) solicits grant applications from charities focused on programs and projects that help women, children, and families in our community. NMWC welcomes opportunities for club members to volunteer at those organizations submitting applications, but this is not a funding requirement.

NMWC only funds nonprofit charitable organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501(C)(3) of the internal revenue code. NMWC does not fund capital campaigns, political organizations, or religious organizations, unless the funds are directed to a significant project that is nonsectarian, and benefits a broad base in the community. NMWC does not fund organizations that “re-gift” the funds received. NMWC does not fund organizations that are not yet formed or do not have an “operating model” to deliver services. NMWC’s strong preference is to support efforts that assist larger numbers of people.

Grant applications are available and accepted June 1 to July 15 of each year. All grants are reviewed by the Appropriations Committee and approved by the NMWC Board. Applicants are notified of their status by November. All grants are dispersed in May. Grant amounts are determined by the fundraising achieved by NMWC membership, and up to the amount requested. The goal is to help as many charities as we can in our communities. There will be no cap on what a charity can request, assuming a detailed budget is provided to explain the request.

Charities are eligible to apply for grants each year. The provision of a grant by NMWC in any given year does not entitle the receiving organization to any future grants.

All charities awarded grants of $5,000 or more shall report back to NMWC one year after receiving the grant with an actual grant expenditure budget. The report shall describe the use of funds and project impact.

If you have any immediate questions, you are welcome to contact the Appropriations Committee at charityrequest.nmwc@gmail.com.
